Updates from competition
18th June : Day Seven
The finals were held today. Although we failed to qualify, it was an excellent opportunity to learn from the performances of the winning robots. After the finals, many participating teams gathered for photographs sessions and saying goodbyes. It was certainly a great competition, one where we made many friends and gained valuable experiences. The competition may be over, but the memories last forever!
Watch this space, because we will be back in 2007!
17th June : Day Six
It was a bad day for Team ROPE as we crashed out in the knockout stages for both the PK and 2-vs-2 contests. The new robots suffered from intermittent electronics problems from the earlier rounds and these problems resulted in the poor performance in the KO stages. It was a real letdown as we were unable to try out several new strategies that we had spent many hours devising.
In the evening, we attended a banquet specially arranged by the organisers. They spared no efforts in ensuring a great time for all participants, with lots of food, drinks and a large projector screen showing 'live' World Cup action! What more can a soccer fan ask for?
15th June : Day Four
The 2-vs-2 matches were held today. In this event, teams play football, albeit with just 2 robots on each side. This is truly a challenging event as robots need to defend and attack as a team in a 20-minutes game of two halves. Riding on the wave of success yesterday, Team ROPE did well and secured top spot in our group again!
Like the PK knockout stages, the 2-vs-2 knockout matches will be held on Saturday. It will be a long day and we hope to bring great news back! ---- Wilson Aw
14th June : Day Three
The competition has commenced! The penalty kick (PK) preliminary round was held today to determine the master blasters of the humamoid world. Like the actual game, teams face off in the traditional 5-kicks penalty shootout, with a striker shooting against the opposing team's goalkeeper. Many teams sent out goalkeepers that actually dive to save shots and this makes it tricky for the striker. Speed and accuracy are the order of the day.
I am glad to announce that we have qualified for the next round as group winners, after winning all of our matches! The next round of PK (knockout stage) matches will be held on Saturday (17 Jun). We hope to do NUS proud! ---- Wilson Aw
13th June : Day Two
More teams have arrived, including several newcomers to the competition. Seated around us include teams from Japan, Germany, Japan, Italy, Mexico, Portugal and Iran, which are actual World Cup participants! It really makes us feel proud to represent Singapore and NUS! The teams this year are look strong and we look forward to a challenging contest over the next few days! ---- Wilson Aw
12th June : Day One
Our team has just arrived at Bremen. It's a really beautiful city and we are staying just beside the railway station. The current time in Bremen is 1:30pm (six hours behind Singapore time). We are currently unpacking and setting up the robots. Both today and tomorrow are the setup days for the participants. The actual competition will start from Wed (14 June). The first event will be the penalty kick (round robin). ----- Wilson Aw
